Influence is a state of being.  When we are living with our influence fully expressed doors open, life becomes easier and we make a difference. We need to develop clear communication skills to express what we need and to make ourselves heard. Power, voice and influence are all directly connected.  Power is the ability, strength, and capacity to do something.    Influence is the effect of something on a person, thing, or event or the power that somebody has to affect other people’s thinking or actions by means of argument, example, or force of personality. Voice is the necessary vehicle to express what needs to change- be different or developed. When we believe we have the power to create change influence is a direct outcome.

It’s important for us to understand what we value in order to make a decision on where we want to place our attention in the world.  Power is the energy behind influence and can be found in four specific realms:  the spiritual, the intellectual, the emotional and the physical.  Have you ever thought about the source of your power?  Have you ever asked yourself where you place the majority of your power and influence?

Women have a great ability to influence the direction in which the world is moving but we must first understand our powerful and unique world view and value the strength and contribution of our voice.  Voice is the medium or expression for power and influence.  In my work with women, two of the greatest areas I have focused on over the years are clear expression of voice and the right use of will or influence.  We need clarity and confidence to express our values through our voice.

·         Where in your life do you need to create influence in the New Year?

·         What power or skills do you need to develop to do so?

·         Is your voice clear and strong enough to support the change you want to make? If not, where do you need to strengthen it?

Enter the new year awake and ready to make change. You have it in you!

As a university student, Autumn means the new year more than the New Year.  This year, I feel its power more than ever.  So, if I am to look at fall as a “new year” what does it mark the beginning of, and what does it mark the end of?

Let’s start with the end.  Summer concludes with the initiation of Autumn.  The caveat here is if (more…)

“The responses and results that you receive from anyone, in any situation, are triggered by the stimuli you provide.  The stimuli are your behaviors.  This is the only way people can get to know you…If you behave in purposeful, meaningful, constructive ways, you get superior results.  That is how you create your own experience.  When you choose the behavior (the action), you choose the consequences.”

Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D.  “Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters”

Now as 2009 ends is the perfect time for you to choose the behavior and actions that will support you to get the consequences you truly desire.  It is time for women to be who they really are by bringing forth their unique attributes and gifts.  The world desperately needs their compassion, their ability to see the whole picture and work for the good of all.  We have seen over the past year what happens when we strive towards individual gratification, whether the individual is a person or a corporation.

In a webinar which is ending in the next week, I have been supporting women to create their own unique, sustainable Blueprints for 2009.  This webinar has created a good deal of excitement concerning the positive things that will be happening in 2010 with the women involved.   It is a life transforming process that will bring you towards a life of happiness, success and contribution.  Therefore, I am offering this on an individual basis over a nine week period to those of you who are ready to take the journey with me.  There are details about this course for more information please contact us at info@theessentialfeminine.com.

Think of 2010 as a chance to begin a new decade with confidence in yourself as a woman who can create the life she envisions.

Several years ago in a blog entitled “Are Women In The US Really Leading?”, I commented on a global survey ranking women in the area of gender equality that was compiled by “The White House Project”.  The survey stated that “The United States ranks 22nd out of 115 countries.”  The report utilized 4 measurement standards: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.  We came in first for Health and Survival, and third for Economic Opportunity.  But, we received our lowest score for Political Empowerment, coming in 66th.

I wondered about our progress since that time and went looking for an updated report.  I discovered a thought provoking and heart touching blog written by Mary C. Wilson for “The White House Project Blog”, entitled A False Divide Between Head and Heart: What I Learned From Robert McNamara.  It is well worth reading in its entirety.

As for the report, she states in her blog, “Women are still vastly underrepresented in the halls of power. As the soon-to-be-released “White House Project Report: Benchmarking Women’s Leadership” has found, women are far from parity in every sector, from business and politics to sports and religion. Projections show that it will take decades to reach even a critical mass in many of these arenas; and the women who do make it into positions of power often do so at great sacrifice.”

 Do we have decades?

Becoming leaders takes courage and determination and most of all a willingness to step forward.  It can not and will not be done for us.  Though, each of us must take that step for ourselves, we need not do it alone.

A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul. ~~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The gift of art, music and beauty is often understated in our daily lives. We don’t often make time for a museum visit, a concert or to take a photograph on the run. The gifts of integrating the arts and beauty into our lives as a daily practice are unbounded.  Art and beauty feed our soul and are central to our very nature.  Today’s world is fast and busy.  It is essential that we make time to experience our inner quiet for it is in this place that we are informed and receive information and wisdom that will actually make our day-to-day life easier.  The gift that music, poetry and beauty give us is the gift of inner contemplation and stillness.  There is nothing more that our world needs.  If we start with ourselves and realize the value these subtle gifts give us, we can begin living our lives from a place of greater depth and contemplation.  The presence will roll out into the world and touch the many lives we encounter.  Take a moment to invite music, art, beauty, meditation and stillness into your life.  This is one of the greatest ways to contribute to the peace that our world cries for now.
