A recent statement, which was directed to the United Nations by a “selection of major female world leaders including Hilary Clinton, called upon “all States to ratify and fulfill their obligations under the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and to implement fully Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women and Peace and Security and other relevant UN resolutions.”

If you are assuming that the United States is firmly behind this treaty as would be fitting given its ideologies, you would be mistaken.  Thirty years ago President Carter sent this treaty to the Senate for ratification.  It still has not happened.  Why? Because special exemptions  have been added to all versions of the treaty.  The result is that “in a recent Newsweek list of the best countries in the world for women, the United States ranked eighth overall, but it joined countries near the bottom of the list – Iran (125th), Sudan (156th) – in not being a signatory to CEDAW.”

There are numerous documents, reports and anecdotal information pointing out that in communities (whether it be rural, suburban, city or corporation) in which women have an equal and active role society improves.  Women, as Maureen Simon points out in her book, “Awakening The Essential Feminine: Claiming Your Influential Power”, have natural gifts for building relationships, verbal ability and communication that creates connection and harmony.   Consider this: “The feminine is highly relational and is interested in points of contact that connect people, allowing for deep exchanges, strong relationship building and communication.”   Can the world benefit from these skills?

It is time for us to join with forward thinking and acting governments and to ratify CEDAW.  We must reclaim our belief in ourselves.

Last June the “Democracy That Delivers For Women” conference was held in Washington, D.C. In reading through some of the conference resources I came across several points well worth noting.

1. Social change requires vision and leadership..

Women who are deeply connected with their natural feminine gifts; their intuition, their nurturing, their communication skills, are women who have these qualities of vision and leadership so necessary now. Developing these gifts is a priority today

2. Women are at the core of strengthening democratic processes and market institutions.

Because of women’s innate attributes of cooperation, empathy, building connections rather than hierarchies, they are especially suited to bring about the social change that will create a new and more balanced world.

To often women have undervalued their natural gifts, accepting them as normal. It is time now to cultivate these attributes and rely on them. They are what is needed in the world.  As women we must take responsibility for creating our own democracy.  We can be helped but without our own belief in ourselves and our natural attributes it will not happen.  Democracy will be created on from the inside out.  It will be based on our understanding our gifts and using them to build the best in ourselves, our communities and then in our world.

It’s funny how life seems to give us the lessons we need at the exact right time.  The vision to start this company came to me seven years ago in the middle of the night.  Each night I received information that awoke me from my sleep and called me to the kitchen breakfast bar where I would walk in the dark rubbing my eyes.  Once I arrived I would turn the light on and begin to hand write many ideas and concepts which were always about women and our natural gifts but were often unrelated and unclear.  These late evenings provided the seeds for what has become  seven years of devoted focus on making sense of this information, researching related material on women’s attributes and gifts, writing a book and now launching The Essential Feminine® Company.

As I look back over these years, i’ve taken many, many risks including using credit that I never believed I would have ever touched and stretched myself in every possible way.  Something continued to guide me to create courses and materials and to bring women together who are interested in seeing women make a difference in the world.  Being a business consultant with an individual practice – supporting women to create self-defined successful lives from the inside out, I often advise clear strategies with risk analysis and well thought out  exit strategies when designing a business.  I truly believe that all of these components are important when designing a business.  However, I have come to learn that sometimes “She” guides us to take chances and risks that we would not normally take.  The Essential Feminine Company was a birth for me.  I have learned many lessons through her School of Hard Knocks.  Yes, looking back I would have done a few things differently.  And, yes, I would have changed a few of my approaches.   Now that the company is up and running, I remember words my father said to me, “I can see some of the hard knocks before you.  I wish I could point them out for you but I know you need to live them to learn from them.”

We learn our lessons in the way we are meant to.  The most important thing is to learn.

The topic around which The Essential Feminine Living Room will revolve this week includes fulfillment.  It started me thinking about fulfillment.

When we order something on line as most of us do these days, our orders wind up in a Fulfillment Department.  They fulfill the orders by packing them up and sending them out.
The process is complete.

The first definition of fulfill is to bring into actuality, a more useful definition when we think in terms of our personal fulfillment.   We will feel fulfilled when we have brought ourselves into actuality.  Recent reports state that many people today are not happy in their work.  I would suggest that their work only fulfills them in that it is completed like packing an order and sending it out.  If our work is aligned with our own personal growth and development, I believe, it would be fulfilling work.  Each day we would get closer to bringing our true selves into actuality.

The reason women come to me is because they say they have done all that they are supposed to do and are still not happy.  They got an education, climbed the ladder, but they sometimes feel empty.  They have ignored their spirit, inner voice and deepest desires.

Here’s the problem.  Women work hard.  Some get top flight educations but feel empty inside.  Some stay in jobs they dislike for security, ignoring their sprit and inner voice.  Some lose track of their natural ways to fit into masculine business scenarios.

The only way that we can reach true success is when we allow our inner quiet wisdom and knowledge to guide us on a daily basis.  The only way that we can truly receive this guidance is by listening.  The only way we can truly listen is by having a way to connect with this guidance.  For some this connection comes in the form of meditation, for others prayer.  My way is through silence – deep silence in the early morning.  Before my day begins I embark upon a quiet inner journey.  I seek stillness and drop into the quietness.  From this place, a sense of refreshment often arises.  By the end of my quiet moments I often feel renewal and a sense of peace.  At times I will leave my quiet sitting with an idea or thought that I believe never would have visited me had I not stayed still long enough to receive it.

Join us in The Living Room of The Essential Feminine when Camille Maurine and I explore ways that you can enrich your inner life and reach greater levels of success and satisfaction.  We will be there on August 25th at noon Pacific Time.  Be sure to register at: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/987535361 .

In their recent response to The Atlantic cover story “The End Of Men”, by Hanna Rosin, Marie Wilson and Linda Basch state that what is happening today is not the demise of men “but rather, the beginning of a transformation of traditional roles that will benefit men, women, families, communities – everyone.”  They point out that “women and men bring complementary and equally important approaches to risk-taking and decision-making and studies show a correlation between management diversity and economic returns.”

It is in the complementary and equally important approaches where change and growth must be made.  All too often in the past society has devalued our best qualities, those that are natural to women.  Our feminine gifts are attributes such as: relationship building, peacemaking, language, creative thinking, and more.

By exploring these gifts and applying them to your day-to-day life, you will see positive changes in your own life and the world around you.  You will be able to adapt to the innovations and changes that are necessary for the future.  As women are equally valued for their contributions, we will be able to overcome the limitations and inequalities imposed on us by a masculine dominated economic, political and cultural society.

As a start, let yourself have the freedom to imagine new possibilities in the areas of career, finances, fitness, well-being, friendship and love.  Say “yes” to an opportunity that arises.  And practice being utterly fascinated with your own answers to these questions:

  • What innate talents do I possess?
  • What are my greatest gifts?
  • What do I enjoy doing so much that I lose track of time while I’m doing it?
  • What are the guiding principles of my life—what is my polestar?

Join us in The Essential Feminine Living Room the fourth Wednesday of every month at noon for an hour long complimentary chat with women world-wide.  Our topic this month will be Feminine Abundance.  Register at https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/896207192
